Police in Kamuli District have arrested a 21-year-old woman, Zainab Mulungi, on suspicion of killing and secretly burying her one-year-old daughter, Hadija Kabawo.

The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, March 9, in Nalinaibi village. Concerned neighbours and relatives grew suspicious after noticing the child’s absence for two days.

When questioned, Mulungi initially claimed she had taken her daughter to the hospital and was planning to check on her. However, her disappearance from home on Tuesday and prolonged absence until Saturday raised further alarms.

According to Busoga North police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, the breakthrough in the case came on Friday, March 14, 2025.

Around 9:00 p.m., family members detected a foul smell near the home. Their search led to the discovery of a shallow grave, prompting them to alert the local chairperson.

Upon further examination, they confirmed it was the burial site of the missing child and immediately notified the police.

Detectives later exhumed the body and transported it to Kamuli General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Investigations have also revealed that the suspect’s husband, Asuman Kabawo, was away at his other home in Mbulamuti when the incident occurred.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case to determine the full extent of what transpired.
