The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has introduced “Light” as the new name for electricity vending, replacing the popular “Yaka” as Umeme Limited’s 20-year concession comes to an end, with Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) taking over the role.

According to Energy Minister Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, Ugandans will, effective tomorrow, April 1, 2025, find “UEDCL Light” on telecom menus when purchasing electricity.

The rebranding of Yaka to Light has attracted the attention of many Ugandans, who have shared hilarious memes and comments on social media. Ugandans are always known for finding the lighter or comical side of everything.

If Ugandans still refer to Airtel as Celtel, why does @UEDCLTD think that our people can easily switch from #Yaka to Light? 🤣🌚 pic.twitter.com/jShRw27BSk
