Karuma Bridge along the Kampala-Gulu highway was reopened this morning. The bridge had been closed in March, shortly after a previous reopening, to pave the way for full reconstruction works.

In a brief statement from the Ministry of Works and Transport, it was stated that the necessary installations have been completed, including the installation of street lights.

“The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) is pleased to inform the public that Karuma and Ayago Bridges along the Kampala-Gulu Highway will be reopened to all traffic on the morning of Monday, 14th April 2025,” the Ministry announced.

“This follows the successful installation and curing of expansion joints. These are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads, thereby maintaining its structural integrity and extending its lifespan.”

Karuma Bridge lies along the major highway connecting the northern and southern halves of Uganda, and also serves as a transit route between the coastal ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam and South Sudan.

The 62-year-old Karuma Bridge is vital for trade and travel to and from northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.
