The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded four police officers from the Flying Squad unit to Luzira Prison on allegations of robbing a businessman of gold worth more than Shs 380 million.

The accused—Detective Superintendent James Besigye Kiguuya, Detective Corporals Simon Owona and Pracid Mulangira, and officer Monday Tibaijuka—are all attached to the Flying Squad unit based at Kireka Police Barracks in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.

Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Frank Namanya on Friday, the four were charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The prosecution claims that on May 9, 2025, the officers—alongside unidentified accomplices—staged an armed robbery at Solent Avenue in Nakawa Division, targeting businessman John Vian Tumukunde.

According to court documents, the officers allegedly made off with one kilogram of gold valued at approximately $105,000 (about Shs 380 million) and $1,000 in cash.

The suspects are said to have used firearms, including pistols, during the robbery.

Prosecution further alleges that the robbery was premeditated, with the officers conspiring to carry out the attack before its execution.

Because the charges are capital in nature, the accused were not allowed to enter a plea, as only the High Court has jurisdiction to try such offences. State Attorney Odong Martin Awiny informed the court that investigations are still ongoing.

The magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded to Luzira Prison until June 12, 2025, when they are expected to return to court.
