Dr. Stella Nyanzi, a renowned Ugandan academic, poet, and outspoken human rights activist living in exile, has finally been allowed to travel back to Germany after being stranded in Nairobi, Kenya, for several days.
On Sunday, Nyanzi revealed that she had been denied boarding her flight at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi by a representative of the German Embassy, despite holding refugee status in Germany. She said she had been told to apply for a visa.
However, last evening, she was allowed to travel back to Germany.
“I am entering Germany as a Ugandan refugee protected by the Germans. Thanks to the German embassy in Nairobi for making this happen,” Nyanzi wrote on her social media platforms.
Nyanzi has been living in Munich with her three children since 2022 under the PEN Germany Writers-in-Exile program, a fellowship that supports persecuted writers.
