Police in Kawempe have arrested one of two suspects connected to a brutal robbery and rape incident in Kisenyi Zone, Kawempe Division. The suspect was apprehended after a sniffer dog picked up his scent and led officers to his location.
During a press briefing at the Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire revealed that the suspect has been identified as Jonathan Ssekandi.
According to Owoyesigyire, the robbery and rape took place in the early hours of June 13, 2025, at around 1:00 a.m. Two assailants, armed with a knife, reportedly broke into the home of a local businesswoman, raped her, and stole various items, including a 32-inch flat-screen television, a Samsung A4 mobile phone, and Shs500,000 in cash before fleeing the scene.
The victim later reported the incident to Kakungulu Police Post and requested the assistance of the police canine unit.
At around 1:30 p.m., a team of CID officers, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and canine handlers visited the scene. The sniffer dog began tracking the scent from where the stolen television had been placed. The trail led police roughly 100 metres away to a small room where Ssekandi was found asleep. The dog confirmed the match by sitting beside the suspect.
The second suspect, identified only by his alias “Mayor” (real name Ssulasako), escaped when he saw police approaching.
A search of the room where Ssekandi was arrested uncovered a number of items believed to be linked to the crime. These included a sharp knife with a black cover, a pair of scissors, a hammer, and several bundles of opium wrapped in six blue polythene bags, hidden inside a sack.
“We are actively pursuing the second suspect and appeal to members of the public with any information on his whereabouts to come forward,” Owoyesigyire said.
