A suspected armed robbery targeting mobile money agents in Kitintale, a suburb of Kampala, was foiled on Thursday, leaving one suspect dead and another arrested
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, two armed men attacked mobile money operators Ibrahim Ssebanenya and Rashid Kyeyune at the Kitintale trading centre, making off with an undisclosed sum of money at gunpoint.
The victims managed to escape and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents who quickly alerted police. Officers from Kitintale Police Station responded promptly and pursued the suspects as they attempted to flee towards Bugolobi.
During the chase, one of the suspects, identified as Farouk Matovu, was apprehended. His accomplice, however, attempted to evade capture by firing gunshots into the air. He was shot and killed by Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier who was guarding a residence in Bugolobi at the time.
Police recovered a rifle and two magazines from the scene. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact amount of money stolen and to establish further details surrounding the attempted robbery.
