By Falguni (PT), Physiotherapist – UMC Victoria Hospital
Paediatric Physical Therapy, also known as Paediatric Physiotherapy, is a specialized form of therapy that supports children who have difficulty with movement, walking, or participating in everyday activities. It is essential in addressing the unique developmental needs of children, using a variety of therapeutic techniques to enhance mobility, strength, and independence while helping them reach developmental milestones.

Paediatric physiotherapy can benefit children diagnosed with a wide range of conditions. These include, but are not limited to:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Brachial Plexus Injury
- Cerebral Palsy
- Congenital Limb Deficiencies
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Developmental Coordination Disorder
- Developmental Delay (including infants “at risk”)
- Down Syndrome
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Myelomeningocele (with or without Hydrocephalus)
- Torticollis (with or without Plagiocephaly)
What is DMI Therapy?

DMI Therapy (Dynamic Movement Intervention) is a therapeutic approach used in both physical and occupational therapy for children with motor delays. It focuses on improving automatic postural responses and encouraging developmental progress through targeted, dynamic exercises.
Each session is tailored to provoke specific active motor responses in the child. These responses are triggered through carefully selected activities designed by a trained therapist. DMI Therapy is based on the latest research in neurorehabilitation and aims to:
- Promote neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to form new neural connections)
- Improve postural control and balance
- Help children reach important motor milestones
- Build functional independence
This therapy is especially beneficial for children with neurological and motor disorders, offering hope and measurable progress over time.
