The Ministry of Health has announced the successful delivery of the second baby conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital—a major milestone in Uganda’s public healthcare system.

The healthy baby girl, weighing 3.6 kilograms, was born to Salim Malinga and Sayeed Rukusana. In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry extended heartfelt congratulations to the couple and hailed the birth as a testament to Uganda’s growing capacity in providing advanced fertility treatment.

“This is a proud moment for the country. Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital has delivered its second IVF baby. Congratulations to Salim Malinga and Sayeed Rukusana!” read part of the Ministry’s statement.

Uganda rolled out its public IVF services in August 2024, making assisted reproduction more accessible to couples who previously had to seek expensive treatment from private clinics or abroad. Since its inception, the programme has resulted in 11 confirmed pregnancies—offering renewed hope to many struggling with infertility.

The initiative is a key component of the government’s broader effort to enhance maternal health services and address infertility, a condition that affects approximately 10–15% of Ugandan couples, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Mulago’s IVF centre is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and staffed by a dedicated team of expert gynecologists, embryologists, and reproductive health nurses—ensuring the highest standards of care for patients seeking fertility support.
