The second day of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateurs Open Golf Championship, ended with the National Team Captain- Joseph Cwinyaai, breathing down the neck of Zambia’s Dominic Musonda, after reducing his lead to 1 stroke, at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club.

Musonda, who led Cwinyaai by two strokes, on day one, with a 6-under 65, faced a slightly tougher day two, adding four extra shots, carding a 2-under 69, and aggregating his score to 8-under 134, ahead of Friday’s third round.

Cwinyaai, one of the home crowd favorites, however, had the best round of the day, shooting a 3-under 68, bringing his two-day total to 7-under 135, just one shot behind the leader.

Cwinyaai, who had a shaky start to his round, after dropping one shot on the first hole, went on to play a bogey-free round, and made four birdies.

“My putting was good today, despite a bogey on hole one,” Cwinyaai said, adding, “I am happy that I’ve been able to reduce the chase to just a stroke, this is a good way to go into the last two rounds.”

On the other hand, Musonda, who had eight birdies in round one, only made four in round two. He also carded two bogeys, and despite delivering an overall good round, Cwinyaai’s relentless push put some pressure on the leader.

“I struggled on the putting green, despite my fairway-to-green, and two-putt strategy. I believe that’s why I made pars from holes 8 to 17,” Musonda said.

Musonda adds that he will maintain his playing style, focusing on consistency, and managing the challenging par-71 course effectively.

Meanwhile, Abdul Kakeeto remains in the hunt, albeit with eight strokes off the lead.

National team stars Elton Thembo and Ibrahim Ssemakula are tied for fourth, with a gross score of 143, two strokes ahead of sixth-placed Peter Tumusiime.

Derrick Musana, Peter Mayende, and Anthony Otukei are tied for seventh with 146, one shot ahead of Rogers Eyoyo, who caps the top 10 of the leaderboard.

The Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Open Golf Championship continues this Friday, with the third round, as players hunt for spots in the top groups ahead of Saturday’s final round.

The 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship is sponsored by Absa Bank Uganda, Aquafina, Isuzu Mac East Africa, Uganda Tourism Board, Medisell Uganda, NBS sports, and MTN MoMo.
