The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has come under criticism following remarks she made about King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro during his 30th coronation anniversary celebrations.
Among, who represented President Yoweri Museveni at the event, told the gathering that the 33-year-old monarch should marry soon. Her comments quickly went viral on social media.
What sparked even more debate was her pledge to cover the entire bride price if the King decided to marry.
“Your Majesty, you know I’m a cattle keeper. Just find a partner, and I will pay all the dowry. Today, I’m making the deposit,” she said, drawing loud cheers and laughter from the crowd.
However, many have expressed displeasure online, arguing that her comments were disrespectful to their cultural traditions. They said it was inappropriate for her to suggest paying the King’s bride price, describing the remarks as belittling to the monarchy.
