The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has spoken out about a series of coordinated attacks that occurred on Saturday morning in the Rwenzori region, leaving suspected attackers dead and others arrested.
The incidents took place in several locations, including the North Division of Fort Portal Tourism City, Bundibugyo District, and Kasese Town.
In a statement issued by UPDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulaigye, the attackers — armed with submachine guns and machetes — targeted Kasese and Lugendabara Police Posts in Kasese District, as well as UPDF positions at Malindi and Kakuka in Bundibugyo, and Canon Apollo School in Fort Portal.
He said that the army, working together with the police, swiftly responded to the attacks.
“Several attackers were subdued, and operations are ongoing to apprehend those who fled,” Kulaigye stated.
The assailants killed one civilian woman in Malindi and one soldier during the confrontations.
“We commend the bravery and professionalism of our personnel who acted with restraint and precision to protect lives and property. Investigations are underway to determine the origin, motive, and affiliations of the assailants,” he added.
Kulaigye further noted that additional security measures have been deployed to restore calm and prevent further incidents.
