Business magnate Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has been recognised as the nation’s Outstanding Honorary Consular General, following a three-month public survey conducted by Public Opinions, a Kampala-based organisation that tracks progress toward Uganda’s development goals.
The accolade celebrates Sudhir’s exceptional efforts in strengthening trade, tourism, and investment between Uganda and Nepal. As Nepal’s Honorary Consular General in Uganda, Sudhir has played a key role in promoting cross-border partnerships, opening new markets for Ugandan traders, and helping secure job opportunities for Ugandans in Nepal.
“Sudhir is an inspiration to us,” one respondent noted during the survey, praising his contribution to connecting the two nations through “economic and cultural cooperation.”
Appointed in February 2020 by Nepal’s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Sudhir formally presented his credentials to Uganda’s then Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa the following month, officially opening Nepal’s first consulate in East Africa at Crane Chambers in central Kampala.
Since then, the consulate—equipped with full diplomatic privileges—has become a hub for fostering stronger bilateral relations. Under Sudhir’s leadership, several key initiatives have taken shape.
In September, he hosted a colourful celebration of Nepal’s Constitution Day in Kampala, marked by a cake-cutting ceremony attended by Ugandan government officials and guests from the diplomatic community. Earlier this year, he also launched a scholarship programme to promote educational exchanges between Ugandan and Nepali youth, nurturing the next generation of leaders in line with Uganda’s Vision 2040 aspirations.
Beyond diplomacy, Sudhir’s influence is deeply rooted in business. As the founder and chairman of the Ruparelia Group, one of East Africa’s largest conglomerates, his impact spans real estate, hospitality, education, and media. The group owns more than 200 properties across Uganda, including Speke Resort, Victoria University, and Sanyu FM, employing thousands and contributing significantly to the country’s economy.
With an estimated net worth of $4 billion, Sudhir ranks among Africa’s wealthiest individuals. Yet his story is one of resilience and reinvention. Born in 1956 in Kabatoro, Kasese District, to a Gujarati trading family that settled in Uganda in 1903, he was forced into exile at the age of 16 during Idi Amin’s 1972 expulsion of Asians.
He worked odd jobs in the United Kingdom, saving just $25,000, which he brought back to Uganda upon his return in 1985. From that modest capital, he founded Crane Forex Bureau, Uganda’s first licensed foreign exchange business—laying the foundation for what would become a business empire.
This latest honour adds to his long list of recognitions, including the 2019 Uganda Development Champion Award and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Uganda Pentecostal University.
According to Public Opinions, Sudhir’s recognition serves as a benchmark for diplomatic excellence, marking his induction into the 2025 Champions Journal.
