At just 16, James Bogere has already made history and captured the hearts of Ugandan football fans worldwide.

The young striker from El Cambio Academy in Masaka and a key player for the Uganda Cubs (U17 national team) has become a symbol of hope and promise for the nation’s football future.

Bogere wrote his name into Uganda’s football history books when he scored the country’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup — finding the net in Uganda’s opening match against Canada at the ongoing FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar. Though the Cubs lost that game 2–1, his strike marked a monumental milestone for Ugandan football.

The forward continued to shine on the world stage, netting the decisive goal in Uganda’s stunning victory over France, a result that secured the Cubs’ spot in the Round of 32.

It was Uganda’s first-ever win at a FIFA World Cup tournament, and Bogere’s name was once again at the centre of the celebration.

Before his World Cup heroics, Bogere had already proven his worth during the 2025 AFCON U17 Qualifiers (CECAFA Zone), where he finished as the top scorer with seven goals.

His impressive brace against Gambia in the playoffs sealed Uganda’s ticket to the World Cup, underscoring his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

El Cambio Academy founder Thomas Thor describes Bogere as a player with rare talent and a bright future ahead.

“James Bogere is ready to play for the Uganda Cranes. If he’s called up for the AFCON tournament later this year, we shall all be happy,” Thor said.

The Uganda Cubs have advanced to the knockout stage of their first-ever World Cup campaign as one of the best third-placed teams.

With one win, one draw, and one loss in the group stage, Uganda now faces Senegal in the Round of 32 this Saturday.

For James Bogere, the journey has only just begun — but his impact is already legendary. From Masaka’s El Cambio Academy to the global stage, Uganda’s wonder kid is proving that dreams, when matched with discipline and talent, can truly come alive.
