Police in Rubanda District have launched a search for seven suspects who escaped from Rubanda Central Police Station after overpowering a cell guard on Saturday afternoon.
According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the escape took place on 22 November 2025 at around 3:30 PM at the station in Murole “B” Cell, Rubanda Town Council.
The fugitives have been named as: Akansasira Junior, Biryomumeisho Dismas, Kanyesigye Ivan, Turihohabwe Anthony, Tumuhimbise Emmanuel, Taremwa Aaron, and Shabaruhanga Paulino.
Maate explained that the incident began when Police Constable Naboth Erou opened the cell to allow suspect Turihohabwe Anthony to speak with a visiting relative. As the officer escorted him back to the cell, another detainee, Taremwa Aaron, allegedly shoved the officer to the ground. The group then took advantage of the commotion and fled, leaving only one suspect behind.
Police say three of the escapees were facing charges of simple robbery, three were held over theft, and one was detained for domestic violence. Case files for the simple robbery suspects and for the suspect still in custody—who was charged with injuring animals—had already been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney in Kabale for assessment.
Following the breakout, police opened a case of aiding escape from lawful custody. The officer suspected of enabling the escape has been arrested along with several others who were reportedly absent from their duty stations at the time of the incident.
