Police in Mbarara City have arrested a 27-year-old boda boda rider, Richard Agumaniiwe, for allegedly attempting to murder a senior police officer during President Museveni’s campaign visit.
The incident happened on Monday at about 4:00pm at the Kikona–Ruti Town Road junction along the Mbarara–Kabale Road. SP Ocaya Kennedy, the Officer in Charge of Mbarara City South Division, was clearing the road to allow the President’s motorcade to pass as it travelled from Rwampara District to Mbarara City for its second rally of the day.
According to police, SP Ocaya instructed Agumaniiwe, who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle registered UAC 177Z, to move aside and give way to the convoy. However, the rider allegedly ignored the command, accelerated instead, and deliberately rammed into the officer, leaving him injured.
Police say investigations are underway, and Agumaniiwe is currently in custody as they pursue charges related to the incident.
