MTN Kampala Marathon is back under the theme; “Run for Kampala”

Last year’s marathon

MTN in association with the Uganda Athletic Federation is back with the 13th edition of the annual Kampala Marathon.

 

This year’s theme “Run for Kampala” is an extension of last year’s run. The 2016 marathon is scheduled to take place on November 20 with a mission to raise funds to construct environmentally friendly bio-toilet facilities in various selected public primary schools in the outskirts of Kampala.

Among the activities is the Kapchorwa-Kampala run relay that will feature runners from the athletics heartland of Uganda and was organised by Coach to Coach- a nonprofit organization from Netherlands. It is aimed at raising awareness and support for the budding talent in Kapchorwa region of Uganda.

The Marathon is expected to attract 20,000 entrants. Over the years the event has raised money in excess of Sh1.8 billion that has been used to help people in less privileged communities.

Speaking at the launch, MTN CEO Wim Vanhelleputte urged the public to participate in what has grown to become Uganda’s biggest Marathon. “Apart from improved sanitation, this project has the added benefits of environment friendly bio gas units that will be used in preparing meals for pupils and a rain water harvesting facilities that will improve access to clean water”, he stated.

Registration for the 2016 MTN Kampala Marathon starts on Monday November 7 at the new MTN headquarters (formerly BAT offices) along Jinja road. The public will access the registration points using the gate opposite Meat Packers. Other registration points include Stanbic Bank – William Street Branch, the MTN service centres at Lugogo (Shoprite), Forest Mall, the MTN shop along Kampala Road, Kyaggwe Road and MTN service centre at Victoria Mall in Entebbe. Registration goes for Shs 25,000/- in cash or Shs 23,000/- for those that will opt to use MTN Mobile Money.
