On January 17, 2026, Ugandan business icon Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia celebrated his 70th birthday—marking seven decades of a life defined by resilience, ambition, and transformative impact on Uganda’s economy.
Born in 1956 in Kabatoro, Kasese District, Ruparelia’s early years unfolded against the backdrop of political uncertainty. At just 16, his life took a dramatic turn when his family was forced into exile in 1972 following Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians. The United Kingdom became his new home, where he worked tirelessly in supermarkets, factories, and butcheries, steadily saving US$25,000 and sharpening his entrepreneurial instincts.

With Uganda’s stability improving in the mid-1980s, Ruparelia returned home in 1985 determined to rebuild his future. He began by importing beer and spirits from Kenya, but when the government banned beer imports in 1989, he pivoted swiftly. That same year, he founded Crane Forex Bureau—the country’s first—laying the foundation for what would become one of East Africa’s most influential business empires.
In 1995, he launched Crane Bank, a bold move that cemented his position in Uganda’s financial sector and gave rise to the Ruparelia Group. Today, the conglomerate spans real estate, hospitality, education, insurance, floriculture, broadcasting, and more. Its landmark properties—such as Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Victoria University, Kampala Parents School, and several commercial towers—have become defining features of Kampala’s skyline.
The Group employs thousands of Ugandans and remains a major driver of private-sector growth. Ruparelia’s success is rooted in diversification, strategic foresight, and the ability to adapt in the face of adversity. Even after the 2016 closure and later restitution of Crane Bank, he continued to expand his investments and strengthen his footprint across multiple sectors.

His contributions have earned national recognition. In 2025, he received the Golden Jubilee Medal for his role in promoting wildlife conservation and tourism, as well as the Lifetime Achievers Award at the National Property Awards.
Beyond business, Ruparelia’s philanthropic efforts through the Ruparelia Foundation have supported education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and environmental protection—reflecting a deep commitment to Uganda’s social development.
The milestone birthday attracted glowing tributes, with many describing him as a “true visionary” and a “national treasure.” These accolades came amid personal hardship, including the tragic loss of his son Rajiv in 2025. Yet, Ruparelia continues to lead with grace, integrity, and an unwavering belief in Uganda’s potential.
As he steps into his eighth decade, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia’s legacy stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, bold ambition, and nation-building.
Happy 70th, Dr. Sudhir—may the years ahead bring even greater heights.
