With the increased Members of Parliament assassination attempt claims, Rukungiri district Woman MP Betty Muzanira has come out to narrate her ordeal with the assassinators who she says have been sending threatening text messages for the past three months.

“I should be in the hide or leave because it was too much. You can’t receive threatening text messages from morning till evening and think you are safe,” Muzanira sorrowfully said.

The female legislator narrated that she received the first text message on October 30, 2019 informing her how she was on the list of people to be killed from the Kigezi region. But the sender gave her an option of giving them Shs75 million for her life to be spared.

Muzanira said she immediately rushed to Police and made a statement. Shockingly, she received another text message telling her that the Police was not going to be of help.

“That is when I realised that this was not a mere robbery, but it was an attempted assassination,” she said.

Muzanira blamed Police of not doing enough to hunt down the people who are behind the threats.

“The people who are threatening me are in my region, Rukungiri. Many people were also being threatened. The Police knew the area where the criminal was, but they never got him,” she said.

On the floor of Parliament yesterday, former Minister Idah Nantaba also tearfully narrated how well-positioned elements in Police are behind her assassination woes.

Charles Twine, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Spokesperson said they are not taking the allegations lightly.

“When I saw the allegations being tabled on the floor of Parliament, we were concerned,” Twine said.

He added, “Fighting crime is a collective responsibility. If we get to the bottom of this matter, we shall share the findings with the public and every Member of Parliament will have security.”
