Following  the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the Ugandan Embassy in the Russian Federation has issued a statement calling upon all Ugandan nationals in Ukraine to keep calm and observe instructions issued by the Ukraine government.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in the Russian Federation calls upon Ugandan nationals in Ukraine to stay calm, be cautious, monitor local news for updates, observe the instructions as issued by the government of Ukraine during this ongoing situation,” reads the statement.

The Embassy has also urged the Ugandan community to notify the Embassy about their safety.

“The Ugandan community is urged to notify the Embassy immediately about their safety, whereabouts and the situation as it prevails,” the statement signed by Ambassador Johnson Ogala Olwa reads.

The embassy also encouraged nationals to keep close contact with family and also provided a contact which they can use to reach the Embassy.

On February 24th, Russia’s President Vladmir Putin announced a special military operation to demilitarise Ukraine.

According to Aljazeera, the move came after Moscow recognised rebel held territories in Luhansk and Donetsk.

“Russia has launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War II,” Aljazeera reported.

There have been air strikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv in the last two days. BBC reported that the sound of gunfire has echoed through the capital as Russian tanks were filmed entering the city.
