The Electoral Commission has announced that the winner of Uganda’s presidential election will be declared within 48 hours after voting ends.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, January 12, 2026, Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama explained that vote counting and announcement will begin at district tally centres immediately after polling. The results will then be transmitted to the national tally centre located in Lubowa, Wakiso District.
He said the Commission will compile results from all districts and cities at the national centre before officially declaring the final presidential results within two days after the close of polls.
Ugandans are scheduled to vote on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to elect the President and Members of Parliament.
Justice Byabakama also clarified the voting process, noting that each voter will receive three separate ballot papers. These include one ballot for the presidential election, one for the District Woman Member of Parliament, and another for the Directly Elected Member of Parliament. Each ballot will be cast into its own clearly labelled ballot box.
He added that every polling station will be staffed by seven election officials, including an election constable, and all officials will be clearly identifiable to voters, party agents, and observers.
Justice Byabakama said all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process across the country.
He urged all stakeholders—including voters, political leaders, security agencies, observers, the media, and the general public—to work together to ensure a successful election.
Justice Byabakama also called on the media to report responsibly and professionally, stressing that accurate and balanced reporting before and after the elections is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the country.
