Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has conceded defeat in the January 15, 2026 parliamentary elections, ending his 15-year tenure as Kira Municipality MP.
Despite the loss, Ssemujju insisted that his political engagement will continue, albeit outside Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on NBS TV, Ssemujju acknowledged that National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate George Musisi won the Kira seat fairly, describing the result as a clear choice by the voters.
“In Kira, the voters gave a verdict. George Musisi won legitimately,” he said, while also voicing concern over irregularities affecting opposition candidates in other parts of the country.
Ssemujju noted that some of the defeat stemmed from internal opposition challenges rather than competition from the ruling party.
“Sometimes, the opposition ends up competing against itself more than against the government,” he said
Ssemujju thanked the people of Kira for trusting him with leadership for a decade and a half, suggesting that voters may now be ready for new representation.
“They gave me 15 years. Perhaps they now feel it is time for a fresh chapter,” he said.
Despite leaving Parliament, Ssemujju vowed to continue advocating for democratic reforms.
“My commitment to the struggle for freedom remains. I will continue serving, just outside Parliament,” he said.
Ssemujju first won the Kira Municipality seat in 2016, securing more than 70 percent of the vote against NRM’s Juliet Najjuma. He retained it in 2021, defeating Jimmy Lukwago amid a strong NUP wave, again by a significant margin.
