Another senior UPDF officer dies en route to colleague’s funeral

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the sudden death of Major General Deus Sande, the Commander of the Armoured Division based in Masaka.

UPDF spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi said Maj Gen Sande died in the early hours of Monday at about 3:45 a.m. in Mpigi District.

According to the army, the senior officer was travelling to Kampala to attend the funeral service of Maj Gen Francis Takirwa at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nakasero when he developed breathing problems on the way.

He was rushed to a health facility in Mpigi, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

Maj Gen Takirwa, who served as the Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, had died on Saturday, February 7, 2026, after suffering a stroke-related illness.

The UPDF said medical examinations will be carried out to determine the exact cause of Maj Gen Sande’s death.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends and the entire UPDF fraternity during this difficult time,” Col Magezi said.
