President Yoweri Museveni has approved a decision by the ruling National Resistance Movement to back Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa for another term as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The endorsement follows resolutions passed by the party’s top decision-making body, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), during meetings held on January 27 and February 20, 2026.
The decision will now be taken to the NRM parliamentary caucus for formal approval before the expected leadership contest in the 12th Parliament.
According to NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, the party agreed to maintain its practice of allowing both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to serve two terms.
Todwong said party members who had shown interest in the positions were asked to step aside to avoid internal competition and maintain unity within the ruling party.
If the caucus endorses the decision, Among and Tayebwa will continue leading Parliament, with the NRM saying their continued leadership will help maintain stability and experience in the country’s legislature.
