Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the deputy spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has asked the Chief Justice to grant him temporary release from Luzira Upper Prison to attend the burial of his wife, Edith Katende, who died while he remained on remand.
Mufumbiro has been in custody since September 2025, facing charges of unlawful drilling and incitement to commit an offence before the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court. His efforts to secure bail have so far been unsuccessful.
In a letter dated April 8, 2026, he appealed for compassionate consideration, explaining that his wife had been battling cancer and had wished for him to be present at her burial.
However, Edith Katende passed away shortly after 3:00am on Wednesday, before any ruling was made on his request or his pending bail applications. She will be laid to rest on April 11 in Busiro, Luuka district.
Mufumbiro is expected back in court on April 10, 2026, when rulings on his bail applications are due.
By the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from the Judiciary or the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions regarding his request for temporary release.
