As AFCON 2025 kicked off in Morocco, football fans worldwide were eagerly anticipating the performances that would define the tournament. One name that stood tall above the rest was Mohamed Salah of Egypt.

Known for his exceptional dribbling, agility, quick footwork, and knack for scoring goals in big games, Salah’s presence was a major talking point during any tournament. Predicting Salah’s impact also affected betting strategies and decisions, including for fans who used trusted platforms like GSB Uganda.

With that said, let us look at why Mo Salah dominated the news ahead of another tournament.

Mo Salah and his impact on the game

Before delving into the media frenzy around Salah in 2025, it is worth noting his historical significance. Salah has been instrumental for the Egyptian national team, leading them to a runners-up finish in AFCON 2017 and solidifying his status as one of the greatest African players of all time.

His contributions go beyond goals. Salah’s leadership on and off the pitch makes him a central figure in African football. During AFCON 2021, he scored three goals and provided crucial assists, and his performances were a significant driver of the nation’s journey to the final.

Salah was a driving force behind Liverpool’s success in the 2024–2025 season, but shortly before AFCON 2025 he made headlines for a different reason.

Dropped by Slot

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot decided to drop Salah shortly before AFCON. Liverpool had been underperforming as a team, but particular attention was paid to Salah’s performances.

The Egyptian had not been scoring or assisting at anywhere near the rate of his previous season, and with little defensive input, questions were raised about whether he was being given preferential treatment. Lesser names might have been dropped from the starting line-up sooner.

Eventually, Slot did bench Salah. The forward did not take the decision kindly. In an explosive interview in early December, Salah told reporters at Elland Road (after a 3–3 draw with Leeds, in which he did not feature) that “someone” did not want him at the club. Salah implied that he had earned the right to start automatically for Liverpool and that he was being treated disrespectfully.

Salah’s future at Liverpool, having won so many trophies and been their star player since 2017, was immediately in doubt. In the following days, Slot said that all had been forgiven, but there were still questions about whether Salah would remain a Liverpool player for much longer.

The tournament setting

The fanfare and excitement surrounding AFCON 2025 increased the likelihood that players like Salah would be in the spotlight. After that remarkable interview, even more eyes were on the attacker.

Online sports betting enthusiasts could find highly competitive odds and various betting markets available for Salah. Betting on individual player statistics made it essential to consider both a player’s recent performances and the competition he would face.

Top bets often included the following:
● Goals scored
● Assists
● Man of the Match
● Golden Boot winner
● Player of the Tournament

Salah was noted as one of the likeliest contenders for the top scorer at AFCON 2025. He has won several other individual awards throughout his career, including the Premier League Golden Boot in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2025.

Platforms that offer insights into the best online casino in Uganda typically also feature segments dedicated to ongoing tournaments, which help fans make informed choices.

Rival competitors

While Salah is undoubtedly a star, the competition was fierce in Morocco. Players like Sadio Mané from Senegal, Riyad Mahrez from Algeria, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from Cameroon were aiming to bring their flair and talent to the tournament.

Each of these players has shown incredible performances in big matches in the past. But Salah is used to competition: in recent seasons he has rivalled Erling Haaland at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts, and at Liverpool he even battled former team-mate Mané when the pair shared the Golden Boot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2019.

Media attention and fan engagement

It was expected that Salah would dominate headlines throughout AFCON 2025, especially with his track record of clutch performances in critical matches. Media outlets were likely to focus on interviews, statistics, and probable outcomes related to his play.

It did not take long for Salah to make headlines for his football rather than his interviews. In Egypt’s first match against Zimbabwe, he scored a 91st-minute winner after team-mate Omar Marmoush had equalised.

Salah’s brand extends beyond football. He is a role model for millions of fans, especially young people in Egypt and across Africa.

His humanitarian efforts and public persona add further layers to the media narrative. How the media portrays these aspects may significantly increase fan engagement in the latter half of his club season with Liverpool.

Final thoughts

To sum up, the spotlight will undoubtedly continue to shine on Salah. Given his history, his record with both Egypt and Liverpool, and the added dimension of competing with world-class talents, he is set to be one of the most significant figures in 2026.

As fans, sports bettors, and online casino players prepare to witness more historic matches, Salah’s performances will likely serve as a focal point.
