FDC stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye has this morning been charged with treason in a fresh re-start of the case that was heard in Moroto on Friday and Monday, then been remanded again –though this time to Luzira Prison.

Besigye was produced before Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court this morning and charges of treason were read to him afresh –but this time also in absence of his lawyers who yesterday said they had received no invitation to today’s hearing.

The hearing also follows the transfer of Besigye from Moroto Prison to Luzira Prison on Monday, upon the state’s application to the Nakawa Magistrate’s court that the case be transfered to Nakawa because Besigye committed the treason offences he is charged with in Kampala and Wakiso, not in Moroto.

Treason being a capital offense, Dr Besigye was this morning not allowed to plead to the charges. After the charged were read to him he was further remanded to Luzira prison until June 1 when his case will be read again to court and with the state updating the court on how far they have gone with investigations.
