Mathew Kanyamunyu a key suspect in the Lugogo Forest Mall shooting has been denied bail but his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and elder brother Joseph Kanyamunyu are out on bail.

The trio is charged with the murder of social worker Kenneth Akena on November 12, 2016 at Lugogo Forest mall.

High Court Judge Yasin Nyanzi has granted the duo a non-cash bail of Sh5m on grounds that they were mere accessories to the crime because they knew about it but never reported the matter.

The judge has ordered the suspects to report before the Deputy Registrar in Charge of Criminal Matters Emmanuel Baguma every 14 days for four months.

This was the second application filed by the trio seeking to be released on bail sighting Constitutional rights and being innocent until proven guilty by court.

On January 10, Justice Elizabeth Kabanda dismissed the trio’s bail applications on grounds that they had not proved to court exceptional circumstances of ill health or advanced age which cannot be handled at Luzira prison where they were being held.
