Siraj Bakaleke, the Kampala South Regional Police Commander has been arrested for allegedly robbing 400,000 dollars (about Shs1.4b) from three Korean investors.
Bakaleke who is currently detained at Nalufenya police facility was arrested alongside four other officers; Isaac Munezero, the Officer in charge Crime Intelligence Katwe police station, George Kayongo, Kenneth Zirintuusa and Patrick Ochen.
According to Daily Monitor, a statement recorded at the Flying Squad headquarters in Kibuli, indicated that one of the South Koreans revealed that their mission to Uganda was to purchase gold worth Shs1.5b.
However, the day of meeting dealers at Acacia Mall is when they fell in trap as instead of meeting the said dealers, they were surrounded by security operatives, put on gunpoint and asked to hand over the money they had.
In this fix, a sum of Shs1.4 billion was handed over to the police officers before the two South Koreans were arrested and detained at Katwe Police Station. After detention for two days, police officers bought two air tickets with Emirates Air and planned to repatriate the two foreigners to South Korea using some of the extorted money.
