Cholera outbreak hits Hoima, Kyegegwa refugee settlements, 22 dead

Ministry of Health has confirmed outbreak of Cholera in refugee settlements in Hoima and Kyegegwa districts. According to the announcement, the refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo contracted the disease from their places of origin.

Results from Central Public Health Laboratories confirmed a total of five cases in Kyangwali, Hoima district and Kyaka 2 in Kyegegwa districts. Four cases have been confirmed in Hoima and one in Kyegegwa.

As of February 22, a total of 353 cases were reported with 22 deaths from Kyangwali with 360 discharged. In Kyaka 2, 23 cases are being followed up.

Ministry of Health stated that most of the deaths occurred along the way or in the community.

Cholera is characterised by watery diarrhea, vomiting and kills a person in a few hours.
