The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba has criticised the chaos that marred the home of the Late Ibrahim Abiriga on June 10, destroying property.

Lumumba who was speaking at the funeral of the slain MP in Lukudu village, Rhino Camp sun country in Arua district called on the president to tighten the grip on the use of social media in Uganda arguing the platforms are being misused.

“We all watched in shock what was happening at the Late’s home. Why would someone do such a thing? All these things were being coordinated on social media. Your Excellency, there is need to restrict these channels,” she said.

Citing examples such as China and Sudan where social media platforms such as Facebook are banned, Lumumba noted that social media is even making it hard for parents to instill values and good morals in their children as the children have access to all sorts of bad content through social media.

Abiriga was the NRM brand

Lumumba hailed Ibrahim Abiriga as a good mobiliser and dedicated cadre who through his work and way of life became the party brand.

“He was the brand of the party. Out of the 36 by-elections we had, he only missed four. He would drive his car and never asked for fuel to do this party work,” she said.

Lumumba suggested to the president, who in accompany of the First Lady, Janet Museveni attended the funeral that a class block named after Ibrahim Abiriga should be elected at Rhino Camp Primary School where he went for his early education.

Abiriga, 62, was shot dead in Kawanda, Wakiso district. He is survived by a widow and nine children.
