Writivism to celebrate African legacy through arts, literature

Prof. Taban Lo Liyong, Goretti Kyomuhendo, and other African authors will headline the 5th edition of Writivism set for August 17-19, 2018. 

The festival edition will be held under the theme of ‘Legac(y)ies’ will take place at The Square and the National Theatre respectively. 

Other top authors that will participate in the highly anticipated event are Akwaeke Emezi (Freshwater), Ijangolet Ogwang (An Image in a Mirror), Mugabi Byenkya (Dear Philemona), Dami Ajayi (A Woman’s Body is a Country), and Shadreck Chikoti (Azotus the Kingdom).

Roland Byagaba, the Writivism Director, and Festival Curator told Matooke Republic that the festival will, to borrow Sauti Sol’s popular work, ‘Short n Sweet.‘

“We have book launches, film screenings, panel discussions, poetry and music performances, outreach to hospitals, markets and schools, visual arts and photography exhibitions, keynote addresses, Writivism Prizes awarding ceremony,” he said. 

The judges’ panel will be chaired by Akwaeke Emezi, a novelist, and memoirist, Daniel Kalinaki, a journalist, biographer, and General Manager- Editorial of Nation Media Group (Uganda) and Sumayya Lee, a novelist, editor and longstanding member of the Writivism Council of advisors.
