After developing Africa’s first electric vehicle in 2011, Africa’s first hybrid vehicle in 2014 and Africa’s first solar electric bus in 2016, Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) on Saturday road-tested its new innovation; a 4-seater Executive Sedan (Kiira EVS) that they claim to be purely Ugandan.

The Kiira EVS is a hybrid automatic car that runs a maximum speed of 180km/hr with a rechargeable battery bank and an internal combustion engine-based generator.

“This car has a 60 liters fuel tank. With the hybridization, charging and fuel goes hand in hand, actually, when you’re driving, the engine is charging giving you maximum effectiveness,” says Allan Muhumuza, the Business Development Manager at KMC.

According to Muhumuza, the ‘beast’ mode car was all processed in Uganda using locally made raw materials.

The sorted metals are from Roofings Uganda, while the interior and bodywork were done by a team of artisans from Katwe [about 30 skilled boys] who did the bodywork guided by KMC engineers.

Sources within KMC intimated that assembling the prototype took the company only six months adding that production trials of commercial cars will start next year.
