UCC ED Mutabazi: UCC is one of the top media regulators in Africa, because Uganda has the ‘best’ press freedom

While the ‘bad blood’ between Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and the local media continues to escalate after the media regulatory body ordered NBS TV to suspend some of its senior journalists earlier this week, UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi is of the view that despite the ongoing ‘conflict’, UCC is ranked amongst the best communication regulators on the continent.

Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi

According to Mutabazi, this is because Uganda offers the best media freedom in Africa.

“No country in Africa brings out content better than how it is done in Uganda,” Mutabazi claimed on The Capital Gang.

“In October last year, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ranked us amongst the best,” he added.

Mutabazi also reckoned that as UCC, they co-operate with all players in the political arena without segregation.

“We always sit with the opposition and we discuss issues. I always tell them that once they stop you from being hosted on any media platform, call UCC and it will help,” the Executive Director said.

However, Mutabazi is also of the view that Uganda has the fastest-growing social media constituency in Africa, and that this is adding no value to the nation because the content posted is ‘rubbish.’

“It is more of hate speech and insults,” Mutabaazi said.
