Last week Attorney General, William Byaruhanga tabled five bills in Parliament as reforms government wants to make in the electoral laws ahead of the 2021 general elections. The proposed reforms caused a public uproar claiming they targeted opposition individuals like Bobi Wine.

Speaking on NBS TV Frontline, government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo stated that the NRM government considers serving the public than individuals. He said they always do enough research before coming up with anything but the opposition loves trick-playing them.

“The NRM government is damned if we do and damned when we don’t. The opposition will try to use the lack of electoral reforms to explain why they’ll lose,” Ofwono said.

“If you think this government hasn’t paid attention to public concern, we have elections in 2021. Vote it out,” he added.

Since government already tabled the bills before parliament, Ofwono challenged the opposition to also bring their constitutional amendments.

Yesterday, shadow Attorney general Hon Wilfred Niwagaba moved a motion seeking leave of Parliament to introduce a private member’s bill entitled “the constitution (amendment) bill, 2019.”

In some of the amendments, Hon Niwagaba’s bill seeks to provide for the involvement of the Judicial Service Commission in the appointment of members of the Electoral Commission. The Bill also seeks to prohibit the appointment of ministers from among Members of Parliament.

It will also be seeking for the reinstatement of presidential terms limits, replace the office of vice president with the office of the deputy president and repeal the office of Prime minister among others.
