Last week news broke how Makerere University had procured gowns for the 70th graduation ceremony from China, of course the news gained a mixed reaction with the majority section accusing the University for importing gowns yet they have a school of arts and design.

This morning the University Communications Manager, Dr Muhammad Kiggundu has revealed why the institution came up with the decision of importing gowns.

Dr Kiggundu says that last year, they procured the gowns from within and it was easy for students to come up with duplicates. A move to buy them from abroad meant each student had to strictly pick the gown from the University.

He further discloses that not everything was done in China, local designers played a role.

“We shall look into the issue of China after graduation. However, the design of the gowns was done in Uganda,” says Kiggundu.

He also assures students that despite the supplier being not able to deliver on time, the University has got emergency measures and each student will be able to have a gown on graduation day.

Yesterday the University released a statement assuring students, although it is reported by some sections of the media that students will receive their gowns in shifts.

Makerere University’s 70th graduation ceremony has kicking off tomorrow January 14, 2020 and it will go on until Friday, January 17, 2020.
