Health Ministry has so far spent Shs2.2b on COVID-19 patients’ meals, Shs5b on fuel, Shs13b on testing kits and sample collection materials

A delegation from the Ministry of Health led by Hon. Joyce Moriku and Permanent Secretary Diana Atwine has today appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Government Assurances and Implementation, to update the committee on the implementation of COVID-19 undertakings using the funds appropriated by Parliament.

In April, the Parliamentary budget Committee raised the Ministry of Health’s supplementary budget request from Shs82 billion to Shs125 billion to handle the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Joyce Moriku, the State Minister for Health said that meals worth Shs2.285 billion have been provided to patients and health workers actively involved in the response. Besides, Moriku stated that a total of Shs2.5 billion was spent to cater for hotel bills and meals for the initial returnees that were quarantined.

Regarding the procurement of test kits, Moriku said that Shs13 billion was allocated to procurement of the test kits and sample collection materials. She noted that procurement contracts have been cleared by Solicitor General.

She also told the Committee that a total of Shs5.948 billion was paid to the fuel supplier while Shs11 billion was allocated for procurement of 38 ambulances.
