Minister for health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has issued a warning to Ugandans who have become complacent in adhering to the set Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Aceng said though the ministry and the country at large has put up a very good fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the efforts are likely to go to the ditch if the public continues to violate the SOPs.

The minister said Kampala has joined the hot spot districts for the deadly virus and soon it might get worse.

“I want to encourage Ugandans that the direction in which this pandemic will go in this country will be determined by the population.

If we’re responsible people we’ll keep it under control but if we become irresponsible and careless then it may blow out of proportion and cause us to lose some good number of lives,” Aceng said.

She said that majority of Uganda’s COVID related deaths are people who had High Blood Pressure or, combined with diabetes.

“We’ve also had cases of people who had HIV succumbing to the virus, even healthy ones,” she said.

With this being an election period, Aceng said she has already written to all party presidents informing them about the need to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures.

“I have requested them to cascade the message down to last person beginning with themselves,” she said.

The minister also confirmed another COVID-19 related death taking the total number of death to 10. To-date Uganda has 1,332 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,139 recoveries.
