Uganda’s Double Commonwealth Games gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei has ‘did it again’ for the pearl of Africa as he has lived up to the expectation in the 5000m at the Wanda Diamond League in Monaco.

The 23-year-old has finally broken the competition world record time of 12:37.35 minutes set by Ethiopian runner Kenenisa Bekele in 2004.

Cheptegei tipped off the race with a serious winning mentality as he kept the same pace from start to finish. Cheptegei posted a new world record at the competition of 12:35.37.

Cheptegei first burst onto the scene with a notoriously aggressive performance at the 2017 cross country world championships, leading for six miles and then completely collapsing in the final mile. He won the 10,000 meters at last year’s world championships.
