Uganda’s ruling party National Resistance Movement yesterday held its primaries where members voted for their flag bearers for the 2021 general elections. The primaries saw a series of upsets with various ministers being voted out.

Ministers; Chris Baryomunsi, Betty Anywar, Evelyn Anite and Mary Karooro Okurut among others were all defeated in their respective races.

According Rogers Mulindwa, the NRM spokesperson the primaries have showed that NRM has no big shots when it comes to elections and that’s why many ministers have been defeated. He said elections help voters to clean up the party.

“I also think that there many other reasons as to why some NRM big shots and MPs lost aside from the issue of the age limit removal. Some individuals became a bit lazy when they were given ministerial positions, that’s why they lost,” Mulindwa said.

He said the results have ushered in ‘fresh blood’ in their party and so all opposition members should be worried ahead of the national polls.

“However, it’s now important for use to reconcile all party members now that the elections are done. And this has to be done very fast before the national polls,” he said.
