Presidential Press Secretary, Don Wanyama has hit out at political candidates who are holding rallies and making stopovers that expose the masses to contracting the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Wanyama says in ‘normal times’ every candidate has the capacity to pull crowds but since the world is still fighting COVID-19, politicians must adopt safe measures of carrying out their political activities.

“In this campaign, every candidate is capable of “drawing” crowds, even the affable presidential candidate John Katumba. But these are abnormal times and a leader who places the public at health risk just to score quick political points should be called out. Electoral Commission must demand guidelines are followed,” says Wanyama.

On Monday this week, the minister of health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng announced that government decided to increase the number of people for a gathering from 70 to not more than 200 people. However, some politicians have questioned the practicability of decision especially during elections given the short time of conducting campaigns.

Today is the third day of presidential and parliamentary campaigns. Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni will be in Apac district, Lango sub region, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine will be in Kitgum and Gulu, Democratic Party’s Norbert Mao starts his campaigns in Kasese, Gen Henry Tumukunde is in Rubanda district and Mugisha Muntu is still in the central region.
