MUJIB: The ongoing retirement trend of Uganda Cranes players is a protest against Magogo

In a space of two weeks, three Uganda Cranes senior players skipper Denis Onyango, vice-captain Hassan Wasswa and now yesterday Mike Azira announced their retirement from national team football.

One of the respected personalities in the football circles, Mujib Kasule, the owner of Proline Football Club has said that the on-going retiring trend of National team players is as a result of the outburst of FUFA President Moses Magogo.

Magogo accused players of playing shitty football at this year’s CHAN tournament, comments that attracted mixed reactions. And according to Mujib, senior players have decided to step down in protest of Magogo’s words.

“The retirement trend we are seeing is a protest against the words of the FUFA President. You can’t say that to players in a press conference. That was terrible and they had to show their dissatisfaction,” said Mujib.

Mujib anticipates that more players are going to announce retirement as Magogo’s FUFA has landed local football into a crisis that needs to be immediately fixed.

“The National team is being run like a private business and as I speak, Ugandan football is in a sorry state, it has lost respect, it has lost sense of direction and we must reclaim our game,” said Mujib.

“Our local league is in a terrible structure, we don’t have underneath structures but somehow, we expect the game to grow. How?” he added.

The Proline FC Director who offered himself to stand for the FUFA presidency said that things are crushing slowly because focus was more on having the National team make money for certain people hence he’s ready to reclaim the football glory at all levels.
