Kyambogo University has suspended physical lectures after a number of students tested positive for the deadly COVID-19. According to our sources, about 8 students have tested positive.

The institution has urged its lecturers to conduct lessons virtually so that learning is not halted.

The developments in Kyambogo come a day after the ministry of health warned about the second wave of Covid-19 which it says is more deadly than the first wave as it affects all age groups.

The Director General Health Services, Henry Mwebesa has also today addressed the public on the current COVID-19 situation in the country.

“It’s obvious from our statistics that the number of cases and deaths are increasing. Our data shows that the most affected age group is 20-39 years old,” said Mwebesa.

Mwebesa revealed that many learning institutions are becoming a breeding ground for COVID-19 and these include; 10 Nursing Schools, 11 Secondary schools, 7 Primary schools, 1 PTC and 1 tertiary institution.

He said the main drivers of transmission in schools are overcrowding, non-adherence to SOPs and inadequate supervision of the learners.

When it comes to districts, the highest number of cases in the last 14 days are in; Kampala, Wakiso, Gulu, Amuru, Moroto, Arua, Mbale, Masaka, Oyam and Kalungu.

“That does not mean that the other districts are not affected, the above mentioned districts have been vigilant in carrying out surveillance testing and reporting. The same or even worse could be happening elsewhere,” he said.
