Scientists reveal COVID-19 third wave is ‘very close’ despite Uganda’s positivity rate dropping to 2.8%

As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda wanes, Dr. Rhoda Wanyenze, Dean of Makerere School of Public Health has said that the third wave of COVID-9 in Uganda is very close after a surge in the numbers of people infected with the deadly virus.

Dr Wanyenze said that the threat of the third wave is imminent.

“We see the numbers begining to shoot up slightly, even though things are abit stable in Kampala and Wakiso,” said Dr Wanyenze.

Nonetheless Uganda is currently registering fewer cases of COVID-19 as the positivity rate has dropped to as low as 2.8%. According to the fresh data shared by the Ministry of Health, it has reported 89 new cases of COVID-19. The cumulative confirmed cases are 120,466.

The breakdown of the new cases are; 88 Alerts and Contacts: Kampala (20), Wakiso (18), Mbale (9), Soroti (5), Oyam (4), Serere (4), Adjumani (4), Mbarara (4), Amudat (3), Ssembabule (2), Luweero (2), Masaka (2), Kasese (1), Mityana (1), Kiryandongo (1), Kalungu (1), Napak (1), Amuria (1), Kyotera (1) Kabale (3), Rakai (1), 1 Truck driver from Kyotera.

The data reveals that only 438 people are currently on admission in various hospitals across the country. A total of 95,607 people have recovered from the virus. Sadly 3 new deaths have been reported. Total deaths now stands at 3,041.

A fortnight ago, Ugandan scientists warned that Uganda is set to experience a more aggressive third wave of COVID-19 pandemic if the public violates the set Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) in the face of limited vaccines.

They stated that the third wave will be more lethal than the previous two waves as it is likely to peak at 4,000 cases per day, which is two times higher than the second wave.
