Uganda Cranes has come out strongest from the derby game against Rwanda’s Amavubi played this evening at Nyamirambo Stadium, Kigali.

Both sides equally wanted the tie to go their way, but Cranes held their nerves when they got the lead and desperately defended it until the final whistle. The 1-0 win is a big statement for Uganda to prove that they are still the CECAFA big wigs.

Cranes got their lead through Fahad Bayo in the 40th minute and the goal has been enough to earn them the much desired three points to take them top of Group E in the ongoing 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Cranes will keenly wait for the result from the Mali-Kenya game which kicks off at 10 pm.

Bayo’s goal is the first for the Cranes in this campaign as they managed two goalless draws in the first two games. The result is also Micho’s first win in his second stint as Cranes coach.

Meanwhile, Rwanda is still winless in this campaign as they started with a 1-0 defeat away to Mali in Morocco before they battled from behind to claim a 1-1 draw against Kenya in Kigali.

As it stands, Uganda leads Group E with five points from three matches, Rwanda is rock bottom with one point.

In the space of just two days, Uganda will have to host Rwanda for the return leg on Sunday at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
