The government has defended the decision of abstaining from the UN General assembly vote to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Uganda and 16 other African countries abstained from the United Nations General Assembly vote to condemn the attack by the Russian military on Ukraine.

According to Okello Henry Oryem, the state minister for Foreign Affairs, Uganda’s decision was to avoid a repeat of historical mistakes in being swayed to take a vote on unclear matters of international disagreement.

“One has to understand the genesis of this conflict to avoid repeating historical mistakes,” said Oryem.

The resolution titled “Aggression against Ukraine”, demanded an immediate halt to the offensive and the withdrawal of all Russian troops.

It was backed by 141 of the assembly’s 193 members, with five votes against the resolution and 35 abstentions.
