Former Uganda Cranes captain and goalkeeper, Denis Onyango has shocked Ugandan fans by announcing on social media that he might be returning from retirement to play for the national team once more.

“Uganda Cranes, guess who’s back?!!?,” Onyango said in a post on his social media platforms.

Reactions to Onyango’s alleged comeback have been conflicting; some have praised him for returning, while others have reprimanded him and told him to let the young players take his place.

Onyango announced his retirement from the Uganda Cranes in April of last year and stated that he would only focus on playing for his South African-based team Mamelodi Sundowns.

His memorable 16-year career on the national team started on June 18 2005 in a World Cup qualifying match against Cape Verde.

From then Onyango became a regular for the Cranes. He helped the Cranes qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations by conceding only two goals in six matches in their qualifying group.

He captained the team at the first AFCON finals after 39 years and also led the team to the 2019 AFCON finals.

Here are some responses to his potential return.

Unpopular opinion

Denis Onyango's return to the National team is not the right move.

I personally think Denis Onyango should retire and give a chance to other young goalkeepers to lead the Uganda cranes team forward.

Denis Onyango has fallen into the trap of Moses Magogo to come out of retirement. It is about rebranding Uganda Cranes. pic.twitter.com/lgj0Rujc35

I think we agree that retirement of Ugandans to leave room for others is hard, anyways Denis Onyango is back!!!?

I'm a big proponent of retirement but I think this is good news for @UgandaCranes;
-No one has really claimed that number one spot.
-The fear factor that Onyango brought to the team was no more. Every opponent always asked about Onyango before games.
-He is still 'Mr Safe Hands'. https://t.co/HF9QCqaNH4
