The world football governing body, FIFA, has awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup to a joint bid presented by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

In a unique twist to commemorate the tournament’s 100-year anniversary, the opening three matches will be held in South American countries—Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. This decision pays tribute to the inaugural World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930.

This upcoming tournament will make history as the first-ever World Cup to be hosted across three continents, with matches spread across six different nations.

The trio of South American nations, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, will have the honour of hosting the opening games. Subsequent matches will take place in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. The Opening Ceremony will be held in one of the hosting countries.

This makes Morocco the second African country to host the World Cup, following South Africa in 2010.
