Kalungu County West Member of Parliament, Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu, is under fire on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), for an unconventional gift – a calendar – presented to a blind woman.

In a video posted by Ssewungu, he is seen gifting the elderly woman with a 2024 calendar, captioning it, “The joy of this blind old woman can’t be measured after receiving a 2024 calendar from me. May she blow more candles.”

However, the post has sparked considerable mockery and trolling from X users.

Innocent Kalongo expressed his discontent, stating, “Uganda, Uganda is full of jokers as politicians. So petty!”

@ug2 criticized Ssewungu, saying, “Joseph and team, with due respect, you’re beyond this cheap popularity. How can a blind person read the calendar? Draw another script.”

“You’re one of the people who are making it hard for us to defend the Opposition,” commented Ronn Perez.

Bernard Mukisa questioned the practicality of the gift, stating, “How does a blind old woman benefit from a 2024 calendar? Politicians, what kind of ridicule is this?”

The incident has ignited a heated debate on the appropriateness of political gestures and the need for politicians to prioritize meaningful actions over symbolic gestures.
