High Court Judge Margaret Mutonyi has sentenced 48-year-old Inspector of Police (IP) Abura Emmanuel to 50 years in prison for the murder of his colleague’s 9-year-old child, Namawejje Patience, a resident of Nalya Estate in Kira Municipality, Wakiso district.

According to court documents, Abura and his fellow officer, Corporal Joel Mwondha, shared a residence in the Nalya Housing Estate. It is further stated that Abura allegedly killed Mwondha’s chicken, disconnected his water, and placed the rubbish container in front of his house, leading to escalating and irreconcilable misunderstandings and persistent grudges, ultimately culminating in the tragic event.

Justice Margaret Mutonyi presided over the case and found Abura guilty of murder after the prosecution established that he hanged the girl on November 6, 2021.

Before pronouncing the sentence, the trial judge noted that she had considered both mitigating and aggravating factors.

“The convict has not exhibited any remorse; he showed more consideration for himself and his family. The court observed that he uses his disability as a tool to attract sympathy,” the ruling read in part.

The judge stated that after deducting the seven months and 21 days Abura spent on remand, he will serve 49 years, four months, and ten days.

The deceased’s relatives, led by her mother, welcomed this sentence and broke down into tears in court after the decision was announced.
